Champion Montgomery Experiences ‘Rollercoaster of Emotions’

Sunday, 15:19

Robin Montgomery (21) had mixed feelings on the final day of the Libéma Open 2026. The young American heard early in the morning that the final against Barbora Krejcikova would not take place, due to the Czech player’s withdrawal because of illness.

“Everything started normally this morning. I was warming up on the court when the tournament officials came over to me. At first, I thought I had done something wrong, haha. But unfortunately, it was the unpleasant news of Barbora’s withdrawal,” said the left-handed qualifier, who experienced this success early in her comeback after a nine-month recovery period following wrist surgery.

“It was hard to process in the moment, because I really wanted to play against Barbora. At the same time, you are happy about your first title, so it was a rollercoaster of emotions. I still can’t believe it and will need to let it sink in, but I am thrilled with how the week has gone,” the euphoric player continued shortly after claiming her very first WTA title.

During the traditional press obligations, Montgomery’s phone was ringing constantly. Among others, fellow top tennis player Frances Tiafoe, also from Washington D.C., was quick to offer congratulations. The left-hander’s proud mother was also on the line.

“I’m sending the trophy home to my mom so she and my grandma can find a nice spot for it at home. I hope I’ve made Washington D.C. a little proud.”

The hardworking Montgomery faced a tough route to the title match starting from the qualifying tournament, but the former world No. 2 among juniors skillfully found a way out every time.

“Libéma Open will be a place I’d love to return to. I’m very happy at this tournament and have had a great time. A few years ago as well. I’ve never had to defend a title before, a challenge I’m already looking forward to now. I can’t wait to see my face next to all those other champions on the park wall with the trophy.”
