Griekspoor Edge Out Victory in Dutch Showdown
Wednesday, 15:53
Tallon Griekspoor emerged victorious in the highly anticipated clash with fellow countryman Botic van de Zandschulp. The 2023 champion, ranked as the second-best player in the Netherlands, was too strong across two days of play, winning 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-4 to advance to the second round.
On Tuesday, Griekspoor served for the match at the end of the second set, but Van de Zandschulp fought back, forcing a deciding set via the tiebreak. In that final set, Griekspoor secured an early break before the match was suspended due to rain.
Upon resumption on Wednesday, no further breaks occurred, ultimately allowing the top-ranked Dutch player and sixth seed to prevail.
In the second round, Griekspoor faces Chinese player Zhang Zhizhen, whom he knows well. The pair train together frequently throughout the year, but this will mark their first-ever head-to-head encounter on a competitive court.
