Dutch teenager Thijs Boogaard has advanced to the second round at the Libéma Open. The 17-year-old player from Geldermalsen, competing with a wildcard, defeated Chinese player Yibing Wu in his debut match in the main draw with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
The match on Court 2 was well-attended and was briefly interrupted by rain at the end of the second set. In the deciding third set, the home player struck when he broke serve at 4-4, before skillfully serving out the match against the world number 101.
For Boogaard, this is a milestone in his early career, as it marks his first victory in the main draw of an ATP tournament. Last year, the rising star made his debut on the Brabant grass courts, but only in the qualifying rounds.
In the second round of the main draw, Boogaard will face none other than former world number one Daniil Medvedev. The top-ranked player, seeded third, received a bye in the first round. Their match is scheduled for Thursday on Centre Court.
Meanwhile, Zizou Bergs was eliminated on Court 1 by James McCabe. The Australian qualifier survived several match points against last year’s finalist and won 6-7(2), 6-2, 7-6(4).
