(2023) Griekspoor to semi-final thanks to top win

16/06/23, 17:30

Tallon Griekspoor’s week in ‘s-Hertogenbosch is getting better and better. In the quarterfinals, the new number one of the Netherlands recorded his best win of the tournament. Griekspoor was too strong for fourth-seeded Alex de Minaur: 4-6 6-3 6-4.

In the first set, De Minaur still had the better of the game. Griekspoor was able to eliminate his first six break points against, but the Australian cashed in his seventh opportunity at 4-4 to make the difference in the opening set.

In both the second and third sets, it was Griekspoor who needed just one break to still secure victory. Before that, Griekspoor crawled through the eye of the needle early in the decisive set. Serving at 1-2, he survived an 0-40 score and a total of five break points.

A missed backhand by De Minaur helped Griekspoor himself to the break in the fifth game. Holding on to this advantage went sovereignly for the current global number 38.

A possible repeat of a duel that took place on Dutch soil earlier this year awaits in the semi-finals. Indeed, at the ATP Rotterdam tournament, Griekspoor lost to Jannik Sinner in the last four. The runner-up placed at Libéma Open will play Emil Ruusuvuori from Finland in his quarter-final match. The winner will face Griekspoor on Saturday.
