David Goffin also seized a place in the quarter finals in Miami. The Belgian, who entered the last four at a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time in Indian Wells earlier this month, defeated Horacio Zeballos (ATP-112) in straight sets 7-5 6-3.
Two years ago the 30-year-old Zeballos defeated Goffin in the first round at Miami. But Goffin’s excellent performance this time, he has not yet been broken in the tournament with 27 winners and 14 unforced errors, was too strong for the Argentinian.
Zeballos replaced Roger Federer, who had to withdraw due to illness, in the second round. After victories over Juan Martin del Potro and Fernando Verdasco his run came to an end against Goffin. In the qualifying tournament Zeballos was beaten by Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka (ATP-124).
Goffin, who lost in the fourth round in Miami last year, ended the match with a beautiful forehand winner along the line to become the first ever Belgian quarter finalist at Crandon Park. Previously, Goffin had only reached one quarter final at Masters 1000 level, last season in Rome.
Gilles Simon (ATP-19) will be Goffin’s next opponent following a strong 6-0 6-1 victory against compatriot Lucas Pouille (ATP-88). Pouille, who defeated world number eight and former finalist David Ferrer, won only 10 points in the first set.
