Bertens reaches quarter-finals in wet Nürnberg
24/05/18, 20:22Two-time title defender Kiki Bertens has managed to reach the quarter-finals of the WTA tournament in Nürnberg. The world’s number 18 returned from one set disadvantage against home player Mona Barthel: 6-7(2) 6-2 6-4.
The match in the second round was planned for Wednesday, but due to the heavy rain it was postponed to Thursday afternoon. Third seeded Bertens came back in the two hour match from a 2-4 disadvantage in the third set by winning the last four games in a row.
To reach the semi-final the pupil of Raemon Sluiter has to defeat Kirsten Flipkens. The Belgian player defeated qualifier Nadio Podoroska from Argentina before the rain started on Wednesday: 7-6(6) 6-2.
Bertens won the tournament in 2016 and 2017 and to date she has won 14 matches in a row.
