Murray proceeds with difficulty in Monte-Carlo; Goffin convincing
12/04/16, 13:04
Andy Murray encountered robust opposition in the opening match at the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte-Carlo. The second seed needed three sets to pull away from qualifier Pierre Hugues Herbert (ATP-95) beating him 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
The player from Scotland, who competes in Monte-Carlo for the first time since 2013, meets 16th seeded Benoit Paire, or Joao Sousa (ATP-34). The 28-year-old Murray was knocked out in an early stage in both Indian Wells and Miami.
The curtain fell for Grigor Dimitrov (ATP-26) in the second round. The 15th seed Gilles Simon was a size too big for the two-times quarter-finalist who lost 6-4, 6-3.
The Frenchman might play against the fourth seed, 2014 winner Stan Wawrinka, but the Swiss player will have to defeat Philipp Kohlschrieber (ATP-28) first. The German defeated Borna Coric (ATP-42): 6-4, 6-4. The young Croatian was a finalist in the ATP 250 tournament in Marrakech last Sunday.
Goffin
David Goffin reached the semi-finals at the first two Masters 1000 tournaments (Indian Wells and Miami) this year. The Belgian, seeded 11th, has kept his form in the second round in Monte-Carlo. He convincingly defeated Spain’s Feliciano Lopez (ATP-23) with 7-5, 6-0.
