Cilic edges out Shapovalov; Humbert shows class

Marin Cilic has secured his place in the second round via a thrilling three-setter. The Croatian proved too strong for Denis Shapovalov in the opening round, winning 6-7(5) 6-4 7-5.

The 37-year-old Cilic is a dangerous opponent for anyone. With his powerful serve and aggressive shots, he managed to claim the US Open title in 2014. He also reached finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. So there is plenty of experience for the man, who has been a professional since 2005.

Cilic will face Nuno Borges from Portugal for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Ugo Humbert disposed of Elias Ymer in the last match on the centre court. The fifth seed encountered few problems with the Swedish qualifier. The French lefty won 6-4 6-3 and will face another qualifier and fellow countryman, Benjamin Bonzi, in the second round.
