Mees Röttgering was unable to cap off his main-draw debut with a victory. On Court 1, he had to bow out 6-4, 6-4 against Benjamin Bonzi.
The more experienced Frenchman arrived after two wins in the qualifiers and got off to a flying start. He took an early break lead, but the 18-year-old Röttgering quickly managed to repair it. Ultimately, losing serve for the second time at 4-5 proved fatal.
In the second set, the decision also fell at the end of the game. Bonzi broke the left-handed Dutchman’s serve at 5-4 and secured the win with a final score of 6-4, 6-4.
Despite the loss, the young Dutchman enjoyed the atmosphere and the crowd. “It was cool to make my debut here. The level of play was also good. I had some nerves at the beginning, but they disappeared later. Bonzi started very strong as well.”
Prior to the match between Röttgering and Bonzi, Nuno Borges defeated another Frenchman, Terence Atmane.
The Portuguese player advanced to the second round with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
