De Vroome fails against former tournament winner

06/06/16, 16:12

The Ricoh Open has finished for Indy de Vroome in the first round. The world number 274 lost out to CoCo Vandeweghe (WTA-43), the 2014 tournament winner, in the opening round: 6-2, 6-4.

Despite a 30-0 advantage, De Vroome lost her serve in the opening game. The 20-year-old player displayed a wide arsenal of shots and forced a break chance at 3-2 down. However, a return ended in the net. Vandeweghe took the game and was given a double break as well after the player from Cromvoirt missed a forehand and served two double faults.

The American took the opening set on her own service and she also started the second set with a break. In the fourth game De Vroome had a chance to come back after a mistake at the net by her opponent, but she forfeited this chance with a missed backhand.

Sixth seed Vandeweghe had no problems with her own service and finished the match at 5-4 to hold to love. Vandeweghe reached the quarter-final stage last year when she was beaten by Kiki Bertens.

Prior to Rosmalen, De Vroome played four ITF-tournaments in Japan, three of which were on (artificial) grass. A place in the semi-final was her best result.

Nao Hibino (WTA-69) from Japan or Swiss Stefanie Voegele (WTA-103) will be the next hurdle for Vandeweghe.
