(2023) McDonald surprises Coric

A clever performance for Mackenzie McDonald. The American defeated Borna Coric 6-4 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon and thus reached the last eight.

Coric, seeded third, had a bye in the first round and encountered in McDonald a player who already had a match in his legs on the Brabant grass.

McDonald’s next opponent is Australian lucky loser Rinky Hijikata, who settled with Swiss service volley specialist Marc-Andrea Huesler in a three-setter: 2-6 7-5 6-3.

The 22-year-old Hijikata can also be admired in the doubles. With compatriot Jason Kubler, he won the Australian Open earlier this year. French duo Maxime Cressy/Fabrice Martin awaits them in the quarterfinal.
