5 questions to… Daniil Medvedev
Monday, 09:14
The grass season is about to start. Therefore five questions to one of the top players and title candidates for Libéma Open. This time Daniil Medvedev.
How do you experience the transition from clay to grass?
‘The transition from clay to grass is always challenging. That’s why I like playing right away in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. I won my first ATP match here and that always stays with me.’
What makes playing on grass difficult that people underestimate?
‘Grass is a natural surface. That means the ball reacts differently. A slice, for example, can overshoot considerably. Whereas a spin ball can jump up in a way you don’t expect. So the bounces are surprising. You also have to stand low on your legs, so the first few days you have a lot of muscle pain in your upper legs and buttocks.’
What is the biggest challenge in your career at the moment?
‘At the moment, that is to find my best game again. I am close to that and with every game it is improving. But it’s not easy, because everyone wants to beat you.’
What do you think of Libéma Open?
‘There’s a relaxed atmosphere. You don’t get distracted and you can really focus on your tennis here. I love the tournament. I’ve had good results, but haven’t won Libéma Open yet. I really want to.’
The Dutch public loves tennis. When they watch a match of yours what should they pay extra attention to?
‘They have to be careful that rackets can fly through the air sometimes, haha. That’s a joke, of course. I actually think I show beautiful play on grass. Aggressive, but on the other hand I return far from behind the baseline. I think it’s fun to watch matches.’
