Kontaveit defeated in first round

Anett Kontaveit was not able to peak again after her title win at the Libéma Open last year. The Estonian was eliminated in the first round this year. Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova surprised the fourth seed in two sets: 6-4 7-6(4).

Kudermetova had her first chance to defeat Kontaveit when at 5-4 in the second set, but the latter was able to extend her stay in Rosmalen until the tiebreak. The world’s number 24 finally had to bow for her 21-year-old opponent.

Kudermetova will meet former top 10 player Belinda Bencic in the second round. The 21-year-old Swiss, on her comeback to the tour after a period with injuries, was a size too big for the Chech lucky loser Tereza Martincova: 6-2 6-4.

Bencic reached the final in Rosmalen in 2015, when she was only a teenager and a year later she again performed very well to reach the semi-finals on the Brabant grass.
