Khachanov to next round in Paris, Muller stumbles

The 22-year-old Russian was too strong for Andreas Haider-Maurer in the opening round of this year’s second Grand Slam tournament: 7-6(7) 6-3 6-3. The world’s number 38 will play against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round. The player from Spain defeated former Roland Garros champion Stan Wawrinka with 6-2 3-6 4-6 7-6(5) 6-3.
Gilles Muller didn’t manage to reach the second round in Paris. The Libéma Open titleholder stumbled over Ernests Gulbis. The Latvian reached the semi-final in de French capital in 2014, but this year he had to play in the qualification tournament to reach the main event.
Gulbis was too strong with 2-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 for the 29th seed from Luxembourg and will meet Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in the second round.
Muller can start to prepare for his favourite period of the season. The left-handed serve-and-volley player is at his best on fast courts. After winning the title in Rosmalen last year he reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon after, among others, an epic five sets victory on Rafael Nadal.
Gasquet
Home player Richard Gasquet thrashed Andreas Seppi. The 27th seed from France lost only four games to the Italian: 6-0 6-2 6-2.
Gasquet will play against Malek Jaziri in the second round. The Tunisian needed five sets to defeat Russia’s Mikail Youzhny: 2-6 6-2 6-2 3-6 6-2.
