Khachanov to next round in Paris, Muller stumbles

Karen Khachanov has reached the second round at Roland Garros. The 22-year-old Russian was too strong for Andreas Haider-Maurer in the opening round of this year’s second Grand Slam tournament: 7-6(7) 6-3 6-3. The world’s number 38 will play against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round. The player from Spain defeated former Roland Garros champion Stan Wawrinka with 6-2 3-6 4-6 7-6(5) 6-3.

Gilles Muller didn’t manage to reach the second round in Paris. The Libéma Open titleholder stumbled over Ernests Gulbis. The Latvian reached the semi-final in de French capital in 2014, but this year he had to play in the qualification tournament to reach the main event.

Gulbis was too strong with 2-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 for the 29^th seed from Luxembourg and will meet Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in the second round.

Muller can start to prepare for his favourite period of the season. The left-handed serve-and-volley player is at his best on fast courts. After winning the title in Rosmalen last year he reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon after, among others, an epic five sets victory on Rafael Nadal.

Gasquet
Home player Richard Gasquet thrashed Andreas Seppi. The 27^th seed from France lost only four games to the Italian: 6-0 6-2 6-2.

Gasquet will play against Malek Jaziri in the second round. The Tunisian needed five sets to defeat Russia’s Mikail Youzhny: 2-6 6-2 6-2 3-6 6-2.
