Haase defeated by Goffin

Robin Haase was eliminated by David Goffin in the first round at Roland Garros. The player from The Hague was not able to use his 2-0 set advantage and the Belgian won with 4-6 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-0.

Haase’s play in the first two sets was very solid and concentrated. The world’s number 44 had a response at nearly every hit by Goffin and it appeared that Haase was going to pull off a big stunt.

Goffin held on to an early break in the third set and won with 6-4. Goffin, stoical as ever, won the fourth set with 6-1 Haase was complaining about the light and then he asked for a physiotherapist. His hip and groin were examined but treatment was not necessary.

Haase gave up his resistance in the deciding set after he had lost his service game. The set only lasted 18 minutes: 6-0

Goffijn will play against home player Corentin Moutet in the second round. The world’s number 143 defeated Ivo Karlovic in straight sets.
