Superior Bertens beats Wozniacki

A masterclass on gravel. That is how the performance of Kiki Bertens in the third round of the WTA tournament in Madrid against Caroline Wozniacki should be described. Holland’s number one player defeated the Danish, second seed, with 6-2 6-2.

After the first three games, 2-1, Bertens dominated the first set. The player from Wateringen put the pressure on the number 2 of the world with some great spinballs. Bertens scored no less than 18 winners in the opening set.

A break in the opening game and keeping her service game gave Bertens an advantage of 2-0. The world’s number 20 is considered as one of the best players on gravel in the WTA tour and today she proved them right.

Bertens hit 29 winners and 21 faults in the match which lasted exactly one hour. Great scores to enter the quarterfinals against Maria Sharapova or Kristina Mladenovic.
