Bergs continues to climb
Thursday, 17:53
A first quarterfinal on grass for Zizou Bergs (ATP-63). The 26-year-old Belgian came back from a set deficit in a more than three-hour thriller against Alexei Popyrin: 6-7(3) 6-2 7-6(3).
Australian Popyrin was seeded fourth and received a bye in the first round. One and all made him play only his first match of the week on centre court against Bergs.
The next opponent of Bergs, who broke through at the highest level this year, is Mark Lajal. The world number 195 came through from the qualifiers and got a walkover to the last eight from fifth set head Hubert Hurkacz.
The top Polish player still managed to win handsomely with a sore back in the first round from former champion Roberto Bautista Agut, but the former top-10 player failed to recover in time for his encounter with the eccentric 22-year-old tournament surprise from Estonia.
