Roland Garros: Bertens opens against Sabalenka, Mertens against Lepchenko
25/05/18, 12:19The draw at Roland Garros determined that Kiki Bertens will be playing Aryna Sabalenka in the first round. Bertens is seeded 18th at the second Grand Slam tournament of the year.
The Dutch number one and the 20-year-old Belarus played against each other once before. Bertens defeated the number 48 of the WTA rankings in three sets during a Fed Cup match in 2017.
Elise Mertens is seeded 16th in Paris and will open against Varvara Lepchenko. The 32-year-old American is the world’s number 88. Mertens and the left-handed Lepchenko have never met before.
Twofold Rosmalen winner CoCo Vandeweghe will meet Germany’s Laura Siegemund, a tough competitor. Vandeweghe is seeded 15th in the French capital, but she doesn’t like to play on gravel. However, the American won 4 out of 4 previous meetings.
Libéma Open titleholder Anett Kontaveit will start her hunt for success at Roland Garros against Madison Brengle. The Estonian is seeded 25th at the world’s largest gravel tournament and never played against Brengle before.
Roland Garros takes place from 27 May till 10 June. The Libéma Open in Rosmalen starts on Monday 11 June.
