Anett Kontaveit has reached the second round of the big WTA tournament in Rome. The world’s number 26 defeated CoCo Vandeweghe with 6-1 6-1.
In a duel between the Libéma Open champions the 22-year-old Estonian was much too strong for 12th seed Vandeweghe. Kontaveit is the current titleholder of the Libéma Open. Vandeweghe won the grass tournament in Rosmalen in 2014 and 2016.
Vandeweghe has never made a secret of her disliking playing on gravel. The American obviously prefers faster courts. The number 16 of the world will therefore participate again in the WTA tournament in Rosmalen, which will take place immediately after Roland Garros.
Kontaveit is playing well on any kind of court. The pupil of Dutch trainer Glen Schaap will play Svetlana Kuznetsova or Polona Hercog in the second round. The Russian and Slovakian will play their first round match on Tuesday.
