Vandeweghe wins second WTA title in Rosmalen

12/06/16, 18:27

CoCo Vandeweghe (WTA-43) has claimed victory in the final of the Ricoh Open without losing a set. In a final plagued by rain, the tournament winner of two years ago was too strong for third seed Kristina Mladenovic (WTA-32): 7-5, 7-5.

This was the second title in Vandeweghe’s career after she also truimphed in Rosmalen in 2014.

The players met three times before this competition and Vandeweghe won all three times. The first time was two years ago at the Autotron. Then Vandeweghe won in the qualification round and then went on to clinch her first tournament victory.

After five winning service games rain stopped play for 2.5 hours. In the first game, after the interruption, sixth seed Vandeweghe registered a breakpoint with an attacking point, which she immediately capitalized on with an unbeatable return.

The American was then helped out  by Mladenovic, who hit two balls in the net at 30-30 and thus handed her the opening set. At that moment it started raining again and the match was temporarily suspended for the second time.

After the match was resumed Vandeweghe lost her service game on love at a 4-3 disadvantage after a few big mishits. However, Mladenovic was not able to serve the set out after which her opponent raised the pace and served to get back on equal terms.

Mladenovic, who was hunting for her first WTA- title and had defeated top seed Belinda Bencic in the semi-final, had a difficult service game in which Vandeweghe had set her mind on every rally. The French player could not withstand the pressure and had a double fault on breakpoint.

Vandeweghe ended the final set with an ace on her second matchpoint. The champion did not lose one set during the entire tournament.
