(2023) Griekspoor succeeds Van Rijthoven with title after dream week

Tallon Griekspoor has crowned his dream week with the title. In the exciting final, he was too strong for Jordan Thompson with 6-7(4) 7-6(3) 6-3 and succeeds Tim van Rijthoven as champion.

Due to the rain, the players had to wait a long time to start the title fight. It was Thompson who managed to break Griekspoor in the opening game, but the player from North Holland repaired the damage immediately a game later.

The opening set had to be decided by a tiebreak. In this, the Australian led 4-1. He saw his lead dwindle, but was just in time to win the first game.

In the second set, Griekspoor had the best papers, but failed to win the set on his own service at 5-3. Again a tiebreak had to determine the set win. Now it was the new Dutch number one who was the coolest and was able to force a deciding set.

Carried by the crowd, Griekspoor kept fighting for every point and a break at 3-2, followed by a good service game gave him a three-game lead on the scoreboard. At 5-3, he served his way to the title and dropped flat on the grass after the match point.

The win marked Griekspoor’s second ATP title of the season. Earlier this year, he was also the best in Pune. He also enters the top 30 for the first time.
