09/05/18, 19:55

Anett Kontaveit was defeated in the round of 16 of the WTA tournament in Madrid by Petra Kvitova. The world’s number 10 won in three sets, 6-7 (4) 6-3 6-3, against the Libéma Open titleholder.

Kontaveit showed to be in good shape on the Spanish gravel. The 22-year-old from Estonia, who is trained by Dutchman Glen Schaap, was too strong for Venus Williams and Aliaksandra Sasnovich earlier this week. The number 26 of the world also started well in the match against Kvitova, but the Czech kept her cool. The left-handed Kvitova was very confident after her victory in Prague last week. The twofold Wimbledon champion turned her disadvantage into a victory, her eighth in a row.

Kvitova will play against third seed Garbine Muguruza or 14th seed Daria Kasatkina in the quarter-finals of the Premier event. The Spanish, who is also a Wimbledon champion and the Russian will play their match later in the round of 16.
