Boogaard almost pulls off upset against Medvedev

Teenager sensation Thijs Boogaard was just short of producing another stunning result in the second round. Daniil Medvedev had to dig deep, survived a match point, and ultimately won in the third-set tiebreak: 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(6).

The match between the former world number one and the 17-year-old player from Geldermalsen was halted yesterday at mid-second set. Medvedev had won the opening set but was facing a break deficit in the second set.

After resuming on Friday, Boogaard held his service games and forced a deciding set with 6-4.

Medvedev quickly took a 3-0 lead in the third set and could serve for victory at 5-3. However, Boogaard fought back and – despite having two match points against him – levelled the score. In the ensuing tiebreak, it was the young Dutchman who failed to convert a match point. The more experienced Medvedev then decided the match on his third match point.

Later that day, Medvedev will face Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals. The Croatian came back from a set deficit in his interrupted match against Nuno Borges and secured a spot in the last eight with 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.
