(2023) Brouwer with wildcard in Libéma Open; Van de Zandschulp injured
07/06/23, 09:20Gijs Brouwer will compete in the main draw of Libéma Open (10-18 June) next week. The left-handed player received a wildcard from the organisation.
Brouwer is the third Dutchman on the world ranking list behind Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon Griekspoor. The former Dutch champion currently occupies 138th place.
Earlier this year, 27-year-old Brouwer put himself in the spotlight by reaching the quarterfinals of the ABN AMRO Open, after reaching the second round at the US Open a few months earlier. It will be his first appearance in the main draw in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
For Van de Zandschulp, Libéma Open comes too soon. The Dutch number one did not recover in time from a foot injury and will have to miss the international grass tournament at Autotron ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
Libéma Open has a very strong field with no fewer than three top-10 players: Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner and Felix Auger-Aliassime, Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic, Borna Coric and Tallon Griekspoor.
The event is a combined ATP/WTA tournament. Belinda Bencic, Elina Svitolina, Victoria Azarenka, Bianca Andreescu, Elise Mertens and Venus Williams are the big names among the women. Ekaterina Alexandrova won the title last year.
